What One Should Know About Autism Southern California

By Angel Dudley

Autism is a collection of developmental problems that are collectively referred to as autism spectrum disorder. The condition occurs during early childhood, before the child attains the age of 3. The various symptoms and how severe the condition is are varied, but all forms of the disorder interfere with the ability of children to interact effectively with others. When considering autism Southern California residents need to get as much information about it as possible.

Children that suffer from the disorder experience problems in three crucial developmental areas. These are language, behavior and social interaction. However, because severity and symptoms are greatly varied, different children with the same condition are likely to act differently. More often than not, those that suffer from the severe disorder are likely to develop complete inability to communicate. Their interaction with others will also be adversely affected.

There are kids that show signs of the disorder when they are still infants. On the other hand, there are those that will undergo normal development after birth, only for them to change after some time. They all of a sudden become aggressive, withdrawn and could even end up losing their already acquired language skills. Some of the common symptoms in children include them resisting cuddling or holding, they fail to respond to their name and they are also likely to have poor eye contact.

Young children with this condition will find it hard sharing their experiences with their friends. When for instance one reads to them, they will be unable to point pictures found in the given book. This form of early development of social skill is essential to language and social development in later stages.

As the affected children grow up, they will gradually learn to interact with their peers as they show lesser disturbance as concerns their behavior. If the condition was not that serious, such children may actually end up living normal lives. There however are those that will find it difficult to improve, especially so for severe conditions.

The rate at which children develop is very varied. Some children grow slowly, others very fast. Therefore, simply because a child has taken slightly longer to grow and develop is not an implication that they suffer from autism. Whenever one has such concerns, the doctor should be consulted at once so that a conclusive conclusion is made. It is also important to remember that as much as possible, early treatment should be considered as it increases chances of recovery.

What causes the disorder is still not very clear. Studies have however tried to give a connection between the disorder and environment and genetics. There are certain genes involved which increases the risk in children. They have an adverse effect on brain cells. There are genetic problems that are inherited, with others just sprouting up instantaneously. There is not yet any strong link between autism and environmental factors like air pollutants.

In considering autism Southern California residents should also consider risk factors involved. Boys are more likely to suffer from the condition than girls. In addition, there is every likelihood that once a child in the family suffers the disorder, another may suffer from it too. Research has also indicated that children born by older parents are more susceptible.
