Introduction To Non Lethal Conflict Resolution

By Helene Norris

When a community is located in an area where there are a lot of animals, there is a good chance that humans and the animals will have an encounter. Seeing a bear in the wild for example can be pretty fascinating but it also means danger to you and your companions. One can resort to a non lethal conflict resolution to protect oneself.

There are many types of damage that these animals can inflict. The one that causes the most worry is when an animal directly attacks a human, so that injury or even loss of life results. In their search for food or just out of curiosity, they may destroy objects, cause damage to your house, or even harm domesticated animals.

Many resources are available if you want to learn how to handle wildlife. Relevant organizations may provide informational materials. One could search for books for more details about this concept. Those live in proximity to these animals will benefit from seminars and training.

Before anything else, one must assess if the animal really needs to be dealt with. Not all of the wildlife pose a threat to your health or your safety. If there was an encounter in the past, think about how it happened. Evaluate what the animal does and how this has affected your life. If there is indeed a threat, then you will have to come up with strategies for dealing.

When you are coming up with an approach, one must tailor it according to species. A method that is used for monkeys for example may not work on bears. The habit of the animal concerned must be put into consideration if one were to come up with an appropriate solution. Other factors such as the size of the population should also be taken into account.

Different solutions may be used. One could purchase products, such as repellents to help keep the animal away. You might want to change some of your habits as this may be the reason why the animals are attracted. One can also put up structures or modify the environment in some way so that the animal is deterred.

Just because nothing has happened yet does not mean that you do not have to take any action. You can install these structures in advance to prevent anything from happening. If something should happen, then the damage would be less compared to a property that has not had any kind of protection on it.

Not all people will have the time or the skills needed to handle this serious situations. Fortunately, there are wildlife professionals that can be called on to help with such problems. Such a service may help remove an animal, cover up holes where these animals can enter, and so on. Consultation and assistance will be provided for a fee.

To control animal population, hunting and trapping are some of the more familiar methods of controlling animals. Another approach would be using a non lethal conflict resolution. This will not involve killing animals. It can mean using a product, installing barriers, modifying behaviors and so on.
