Illinois Free Marriage Records

The Vital Records Office and the county Clerk Offices are the ones in-charge of maintaining files of Marriage in Illinois. Both offices accept requests for marriage files. If you want to get your hands on marriage files from the year 1962 up to the present date, you can retrieve them by submitting a request at the Vital Records Office. A county Clerk Office is the one that accepts application for a marriage license and finalizes them. Files of marriages that transpired before 1962 are only available at the county Clerk Office.

Any person may request for marriage records but the amount of information that will be provided will rely on your relationship with the owner of the documents. The husband and the wife, their respective legal representatives, and any individual or group that has the consent from the court are the only ones allowed to view and acquire the complete marriage record. Individuals or groups who are not specified will only be given copy of the verification of the marriage.

To start a search, you need to know full name of either the groom or the bride and the place where the marriage occurred. In case their names are too common like Johnson, Smith, Jackson, you need to provide other vital information to increase your chances of finding the correct record. Provide the year if you know when the marriage occurred, if you do not know it, provide a range of years to be searched on. Keep in mind that government offices are usually understaffed, so any kind of request that you submit will take some time to process. A request form is available at the Vital Records office or it can be downloaded from their official website. Once the form is filled-out, you can submit it back to the office personally, mail, or fax it. The office will then forward that request to the appropriate county Clerk Office that keeps the requested marriage record. If you know the exact county Clerk of Court where the marriage license was given, you may go directly to their office and make the request there.

A marriage record should include a marriage license and a marriage certificate. If there is no marriage license, the marriage will not be considered as legal even if the rites were performed. Keep in mind that a complete marriage record is the only record recognized by the court

Online searching became popular to the public because it can be done wherever they want to as long as there is a computer and Internet.
