New York Marriage Records Online

The state of New York is one of the many states that have implemented the Freedom of Information Act. This law has mandated the government of each state to allow their residents to access their public documents. The local residents can now request for a copy of the state of New York marriage records whenever they need it.

Marriage records in New York are being used by people who conduct research on the family history, also called genealogy. The information that can be found in a marriage certificate is important in updating the family tree. Genealogy can help track the whereabouts and updates of relatives. Marriage certificates are also required when processing some government requests. Most of these requests would involve the couple such as insurance and property declaration. There are also some people who would request for a copy of a marriage certificate of another individual to check their marital status. This is mostly done by singles that are in the dating phase and would like to verify the status of their soon-to-be lifetime partners.

The marriage certificate in New York focuses on the details of the marriage. One would know when and where the couple got married. The complete names of the couple are also indicated on the record together with some of their personal details such as the date and place of birth. Important names such as the names of the parents and the witness can also be found on the certificate.

One can get a copy of a marriage certificate in New York at the office of the Department of Health. However, records of Albany, Yonkers and Buffalo are not available there. It can only be obtained at the county clerk office. Requesting for a copy of a marriage certificate can also be done at any of the local county clerk office.

The state can release a copy of the document if it was registered since 1880 up to the present. A $30 processing fee has to be paid in order to process the request in the state office. Requests made at the local county may have a different service fee. Genealogy copies of the document can be requested after 50 years since the marriage took place. One should know that the document is only released when the one who filed the request is either the bride or the groom and their immediate family. Doing the search in the county is faster than requesting it at the state office. A mail request can also be sent to the state office but it may take longer than usual. The long wait time can be avoided by doing the search online.

The state of New York has embraced the development of technology and used it as a medium to deliver information to its residents. Marriage records in New York can now be obtained just a few seconds even without exerting too much energy and effort. The need to go to any office has been eliminated since the request can be done anywhere and at your convenience. The needed information is almost instantly displayed in the computer screen after doing only a few clicks on the mouse.
