A Brief Look At The Plot Of The Monuments Men Book

By Marissa Velazquez

The Monuments Men Book is one great read that every art lover has to read at some point. This novel is set against the background of World War II during the period where the Nazis under Adolf Hitler, were planning to rob Europe of its art and in the process its entire culture. The plot is quite thrilling although one may feel like it gets off on a slow start. This should however not cause a book-lover from pursuing the story to its completion.

The plot of this read entails the plan by Adolf Hitler, otherwise known as the Fuehrer, to conquer the western world. Part of his plot included the destruction of the art, culture and history of Europe through capturing great art pieces in different locations. The items, which he thought of as degenerate, were to be completely destroyed by his armies.

Hitler, who may be referred to as The Fuehrer, had catalogues a number of art pieces and objects that he intended to have his armies destroy. This destruction was to take place within a certain period of time while he on the other hand, as forging ahead with his campaign to conquer the western world. In his opinion, the art in question were nothing but degenerate.

The plot of the novel thickens when a Special Forces unit that constituted certain American and British curators, art historians and museum directors is formed. These people came together with the goal of rescuing the art objects earmarked for destruction from the Nazis. This group went by the same name that forms the title of the novel.

All members of this 7-man unit had to overcome lots of challenges in their quest to preserve the culture of Europe. Only courage and a passion for the arts motivated them in this mission. This commitment ought to be admired as it is not every day that people volunteer to risk their lived for a quest that is way beyond their ability.

The entire mission was to either pull off successfully or fail miserably within an 11-month period. A movie starring George, Matt Damon and actresses such as Cate Blanchet has also been produced based on this novel. While most people may prefer to watch the movie instead of first reading the book, at times the actual novel may be more interesting.

Book-lovers always say that reading, in itself, is the greatest pleasure of all. People who try to stay away from books at all costs may view this as a trifle exaggerated but in reality, this is what the whole thing usually is to reading fanatics. And while movie productions may be created, such people would still advice that the actual books, upon which the movies are based, should always be the way to go.

The above is a brief review of what The Monuments Men Book is all about. Having this in mind would give one an idea of what to expect from the movie of the novel itself. In order to get the feel and nature of events first hand however, it would be a must to read the novel itself.
